Quintana Roo is one of the most beautiful states in Mexico. Its territory stretches through more than 19,300 square miles (50,000 km2) of jungle, and white sand beaches, bathed by the sparkling waters of the Caribben Sea.
This state is home to the famous tropical destinations of Cancun and Riviera Maya, in addition to uncountable archaeological sites, adventure activities and historic places that keep a romantic scent of past times, combined with nature’s wealth.
Such is the case of a wonderful place called Bacalar, named as Magical Village by UNESCO; a small place located 24 miles north of the capital city, Chetumal; its name comes from the Mayan word Bakhalal, which means “surrounded by reeds”.
Your first impressions once you get to Bacalar, will be that this charming colonial town was built overlooking the wonderful Seven Colors Lagoon (Laguna de los Siete Colores); an immense water body that received its name after the jaw-dropping blend of colors reflected with the sunrays.
This fresh water lagoon has all the beauty of the Caribbean colors, but without salt, nor swell, therefore plunging into its refreshing waters is a perfect option after a nice walk.
And if you’re the walking kind, this magical town has a lot to discover. Take a stroll through the Fort of San Felipe, an edification that dates back to 1725, when Yucatan’s Governor, Antonio de Figueroa ordered its construction to prevent Bacalar from the constant pirate attacks.
Today the Fort of San Felipe is a museum that showcases a fascinating collection of Mayan archaeological pieces, in addition to colonial objects, such as charts, weapons, cannon balls, and lots of information about the famous pirates who became legends.
These walls that were silent witnesses to the chapters of Bacalar, keep telling their stories to all those who pay attention, as a great mural painting shows the most important events that took place in the region.
Bacalar has several hotels and inns for all budgets; there are some truly astonishing options that will make you feel like in a dream.
And if you start feeling hungry, you’ll only have to walk a few steps to find the most friendly people you’ll ever meet, selling delicious local treats at prices you won’t believe.
