Sacred Mayan Journey

Sacred Mayan Journey

The Sacred Mayan Journey is already one of the most popular activities to contemplate in the Riviera Maya. It consists of the representation of a sacred ancestral ritual performed by the ancient Mayans to worship Ixchel, the goddess of water and the moon to whom were attributed gifts of fertility, procreation, work, and healing; due to the cycles of the moon govern the earth, were also attributed the sowing and harvesting. Legend has it that those who asked for this goddess in their temple were given protection, prosperity, fertility, and abundance.

In the ancient Mayan period, devotees traveled from the old city of Polé to the temple on the island of Cuzamil, in canoes boarded by women and girls to worship or make prayers to Ixchel. This route used to be done twice in life: the first, as a girl accompanying her mother and the second, as a mother with her daughter, repeating it through generations.

This ancestral ritual was resumed in 2005, in order to keep the tradition alive and consolidate the culture and history of the destination by sharing the ancient traditions with visitors from all over the world. Every year, hundreds of ordinary people -like any of us- train for months to make the round trip, departing from the port of Polé (now Xcaret) to the island of Cozumel to visit the sanctuary, take offerings and perform a ceremony in her honor, this trip is known as the Sacred Mayan Journey.

This year, the Sacred Mayan Journey will take place on May 17th and 18th. The tour begins shortly before sunrise in the cove of Xcaret with rituals to bid farewell to the canoeists surrounded by the public, friends, and family who gather to wish them a good trip and see them depart for the island of Cozumel. Upon arrival on the island, they are greeted by worshippers of the goddess Ixchel among dances, rituals and cheering, in addition to food to recover energy to their trip back to Xcaret the next day.

It is possible to witness this unforgettable and emotional representation of the Mayan culture, which every year attracts local and foreign visitors to the Riviera Maya by acquiring your ticket to Xcaret Park, at the box office, online or following it through social networks.
